History of Bumper Boats

Bumper boats are similar in concept to the much older and more ubiquitous bumper cars. Like bumper boats, the point of bumper cars is to collide with other cars. Bumper cars date to the early 1920s. Bumper car collisions tend to be more jarring than bumper boats.

Arrow Development Company, later known as Arrow Dynamics, was the original maker and patent owner of the bumper boats ride. Arrow was founded in 1946 by Edward Morgan and Karl Bacon as a builder of carousels and other rides. The company's fortunes took off when Walt Disney hired it to build many of Disneyland's original rides, such as Snow White's Adventures and Casey Junior Circus Train. The company gradually became mostly a roller coaster maker over the years. It went bankrupt in 2001. Rival ride maker S&S Power bought Arrow that year and maintains S&S Arrow as a division today. It primarily makes roller coasters.

Another idea spawned during the decade of the 1930s was the "Dodgem Motor Boats." Like the Dodgem car, the boats were operator driven and seated two adults. As the Dodgem car had given many a first opportunity to "get behind the wheel of a car," so the boats gave many their first chance to operate a powerboat. Streamlined and slick in appearance, the powerboats were designed to give both driver and passenger the feeling of a luxury ride in a lake or lagoon.

A brief eyewitness description of the boats constructed for this new ride was written in July 1932:

Visited Amesbury with Markey and looked over his new Dodgem boat which is a very nice looking job. It is considerably longer than the water skooter made by Lusse and built on a different principal. These are made all of wood. This, if it operates satisfactorily, should prove a very nice boat.

Certainly the most elaborate early boat installation was done for the Chicago World's Fair in 1933. Another elaborate and memorable Dodgem boat installation was constructed six years later for the 1939 New York World's Fair. For this national event, the Dodgem Corporation teamed up with the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC). Not only did they jointly operate a boat ride but also two Dodgem car rides. Both Dodgem and PTC were to have equal shares. Two buildings valued at $27,500 were to be put up by and mortgaged to the PTC, and Dodgem was to supply fifty cars valued at $20,000. For the boat ride, PTC was apparently responsible for the construction of a channel. How many boats were constructed or how profitable the three rides were is unclear.

As to the popularity of boat rides, William Ford, who worked for Lusse Company after the boat craze had passed, reported:

They [boat rides] were very popular up to and after the second world war when operators wanted more space and had to get rid of the required lakes and artificial lagoons. Also, the price of gas went up as well as anti-pollution laws, which were forced on them [park owners] because of the filthy water that was in the lagoons. . . .

Evidence suggests that Dodgem was out of the boat business by the time of the war. An expensive ride to install, outfit, and maintain, especially if a man-made lagoon was required, Dodgem motorboats were not destined to be the stellar performers that the cars proved to be.

Elaborate boat rides would not return to the amusement park scene until Walt Disney and the development of theme parks in the late 1950s and early 1960s began to bring the likes of paddle wheelers and other large craft back to grand-scale manmade waterways.

I know, it’s a given. But I often forget what an easy, fun place this is to visit for the day! If you haven’t been to the Alligator Farm, it’s a must do. My personal favorite thing about the Alligator Farm is feeding time when they throw HUGE rats to the gators (that you are basically standing right above) and watch how high they lunge in the air to catch their meal. Scary and Awesome.

If you are looking for a more laid back kind of day, Project SWING park is a fab playground (similar to Sunshine Park in Jax Beach), located right next to the parking garage in downtown. This is a great place to start a day of fun. A walk across the street will lead you to the Castillo de San Marcos where kids will enjoy running in the grass or pretending they are knights (or I guess in this case, Conquistadors!). Head towards the Bridge of Lions and you will find the Black Raven at the Marina. Hop aboard for a pirate ship adventure the kids will LOVE. An excursion to St. Augustine isn’t complete without a stop at Davenport Park and a ride on the historic carousel ride. It is always our last stop on the way out of town!

Like many little boys, my son is obsessed with all things train-related.  Thanks to the Dallas and Hot Fun Park Rides, we often see “Thomas the Train” (aka the DART rail) when we are out running errands.

1.  Grapevine Vintage Railroad – The oldest continuously operating steam engine in the South resides in our very own backyard and regularly travels between downtown Grapevine and the Fort Worth Stockyards.  The Vintage Railroad is family-focused with special theme park rides like a Halloween Scream Train during Halloween and the North Pole Express during Christmas.
2.  McKinney Avenue Trolley – This trolley is probably my favorite train option.  Why? Because it’s free(!) and conveniently located in Uptown.  The trolleys are restored vintage trolleys that run along Mckinney Avenue.  Looking for a half-day activity?  Park your car at the West Village in Uptown, ride the trolley down to the Klyde Warren Park for playtime and a picnic lunch, then hop back on the trolley to retrieve your car.   
3.  The DART Rail – Sure, the DART Rail is a main mode of transportation for many.  But for my son, it’s a big outing.  We’ve parked our car at Mockingbird Station and caught the DART to go downtown and have lunch with daddy before.  The DART is also a convenient option to take to the zoo, American Airlines Center, downtown Plano or the State Fair when parking is expensive and limited.  
4.  The TRE – Did you know there is a train that services downtown Dallas to downtown Fort Worth? My mom works in downtown Fort Worth, so we love to take the train to visit her.  The best part about it? Free wi-fi!  My son loves the kids ride on train and I love to browse the internet on my laptop instead of commuting to Fort Worth in traffic.  It’s a win-win for both of us. A day-pass is $10/adults, $5/children if you are going all the way to Fort Worth.  Again, children under 5 are free.  
5.  The Dallas Zoo Monorail – Are you worried your child may not have the attention span for some of the longer local trains?  Have you checked out the monorail at the Dallas Zoo? This 20-minute ride thru the Wilds of Africa exhibit is a great entry ride where some of the zoo’s most exotic animals are viewed in their natural habitats.  Monorail tickets are an additional $3/rider on top of the zoo entry admission.
6.  Forest Park Miniature Railroad – If you are looking for more of a nostalgic experience, the Forest Park train in Fort Worth (right by the Fort Worth zoo) might be your answer.  The miniature trains boasts a conductor dressed in railroad stripes and has been a local staple since 1959.

1. The operator and maintenance personnel must be qualified through training and practice before working independently.

2. The operators and maintenance personnel must be familiar with the structure principles of the equipment, performance, applications, operation methods and maintenance procedures, and be able to eliminate common problems, read the operation and maintenance instructions carefully and strictly comply with the relevant operation and maintenance procedures.

3. Before loading people every day, you should make 2 or 3 times unloading test.

4. Before each machine starting, you must issue a warning bell, and start the machine after the passenger seat well.

5. During device operation, operators and service personnel are prohibited from leaving their jobs. None can start the machine except the operators.

6. You must cut off the power supply after working every day.

Theme Park Safety Tips

Almost all theme park injuries can be prevented. With input from many Theme Park Insider readers, here are our top 5 tips to help you and your family stay safe when riding on amusement rides.

1. Don’t cheat

Don’t “cheat” or ignore these rules to get on ride where you don’t belong. You might think a ride looks tame enough for you. But sometimes there are potential challenges on a ride that most visitors can’t see — a hidden drop or turn, a sudden stop, or a portable ladder that riders will have to descend if the ride shuts down. Don’t think that you know more about a ride than the park does. If they tell you not to ride, don’t.

Don’t use lifts or other tricks to make your kids look taller than they are, either. Height and safety restrictions are there for a reason.

And don’t even think about cutting in line. Nothing provokes more fights and nasty exchanges in theme parks than impatient people who won’t wait their turn. It’s not worth getting thrown out of the park just to save a couple minutes in line. Don’t take it upon yourself to enforce the rules, though. If you see blatant line-jumping, please report it to the nearest employee at the ride or, if possible, a security officer.

2. Stay in to stay safe

On any theme park ride, keep your rear end on the seat, your hands on the grab bar, and your feet and knees inside the car. And don’t crowd others who might be exiting when you are getting on.

If there is no grab bar, keep your hands on your lap. If you are riding a “floorless” coaster, relax your legs and let them dangle underneath you. Don’t kick them out to the side or front.

If you are on a ride with a lap bar, seat belt, or safety harness, make sure that it is in place, snug, and locked. If the ride starts to move and your restraint is not in place, immediately yell for help.

Do not get on or off a ride until you’ve been given the okay by an attendant to do so. Make sure that your vehicle has stopped next to the unload platform before you get off. Often, vehicles stop short of the unload platform to wait for groups up ahead to exit.

3. Ride ‘er easy, cowboy

Some rides, especially roller coasters and simulator rides, can whip your head around, leaving you at risk for headaches as well as more serious head injuries. On those types of rides, sit in the middle of the chair and don’t slouch or lean to one side. Relax, but do not go limp. You want to keep your balance in the seat.

When the seat pitches you to the left, relax your torso and bend to the right to keep your head upright and centered. And vice versa. Think of riding a horse, or surfing. You want to ride the seat — not have it throw you around.

Many riders have reported it helps them to keep their eyes open and watch the track ahead on a roller coaster. This helps your body to adjust to the forces of the ride. If you pretend you’re “driving” the coaster, that extra sense of control can help you keep your balance and avoid nausea. (See How to Ride a Roller Coaster.)

Again, if you are prone to headaches, have any neck or back problems, or have been diagnosed with aneurysm, do not get on any roller coaster or simulator ride.

4. Help the kids!

If you are visiting with children, take a moment to explain the kiddie ride to them, and tell them how they should behave. They are depending upon you to keep them safe. Set a good example for them by following the rules above, and make sure that they know you expect them to follow those rules, too. Tell them to stay seated, to hold the grab bar or put their hands in the laps, and not to stick their knees and feet outside a ride vehicle. Make them look to you for the okay to get on or off a ride, too.

And never put a crying child on a ride. If your child starts to cry, let others pass you in line until your child is calm. Or, gently exit the queue and find something more relaxing to do. Young kids can’t keep an adult’s pace in a theme park. Let them take plenty of breaks.

Kids get tired. And tired kids make parents even more tired. When you are tired, you are more likely to get hurt, either physically and emotionally. Consider a mid-day break, perhaps a swim or nap back at the hotel, to avoid mid-day heat and crowds.

5. Alert staff about problems

If you see something wrong — a broken restraint, a person jumping the line, or anything else that could jeopardize the safety of a park guest — alert a park employee immediately. They are there to help keep you safe. So help them when you can, too.
