He convinced organizers to allow him to build the structure, which would rival France's Eiffel Tower. Indeed, Ferris's wheel, which cost $380,000 and stood 264 feet tall with a wheel diameter of 250 feet, was a huge success. Each car held 60 people, and, at 50 cents a ride, the wheel was one of the most popular attractions at the World's Fair. The Ferris wheel is a must-have for any carnival, and thousands of replications continue to delight passengers of all ages.

4. Tilt-A-Whirl

In 1926, Herbert Sellner finished his design for the Tilt-A-Whirl and began building one in his backyard. Sellner's ride involved seven cars attached at various fixed pivot points on a rotating platform that raised and lowered itself. The cars themselves were free spinning, but when you added the centrifugal force and the platform's gravitational pull on the cars, they would wildly spin in countless directions at variable speeds. Calculated chaos ensued. Since then, Sellner Manufacturing Company has built more than 1,000 Tilt-A-Whirls and inspired hundreds of knockoffs. Those who look a little green or lose their lunch of hot dogs,cotton candy, and soda pop are probably just coming off a Tilt-A-Whirl.

5. Scrambler

There are many names for this ride and its variations, but Americans usually call it the Scrambler. Whatever name is emblazoned on its side, this ride is fast -- really fast. Picture this: the ride has three arms. On the ends of each of those arms are clusters of individual cars, each on a smaller arm of its own. When the Scrambler starts, the main arm and the little arms all rotate. The outermost arms are slowed and the inner arms are accelerated, creating an illusion of frighteningly close collisions between the cars and their passengers. The Scrambler proves that you don't have to go on a roller coaster to lose your lunch or have the wits scared out of you.

Man on a mission to save Merry-Go-Round for Bloomfield

For more than one generation of children in the Bloomfield area, a quick trip to the store meant the chance to climb aboard a horse and take a ride on the Merry-Go-Round at the entrance to Bloomfield's IGA grocery.

Now, with the recent closure of the store, the Merry-Go-Round is on the auction block and could be sold to a collector who would pick it up and haul it out of town.

But one man has started a campaign to save the Merry-Go-Round and he's asking for the community's help to keep it in Bloomfield.

Brian Pearson has lived all of his 40 years in Bloomfield and now lives on the same property where he grew up. He remembers riding the Merry-Go-Round as a child.

"I played on it, and my son played on it, and I am thinking, 'Why can't we keep this in Bloomfield?'" said Pearson.

The Merry-Go-Round, boasting three small horses, has been a fixture and a part of the memories of growing up in Bloomfield for many years -- Pearson says it has to be pushing 40 years old, maybe older.

It's coin-operated, taking small children for a few spins for just a quarter or two.

The Merry-Go-Round is a nostalgic part of the memories of so many people in Bloomfield that Pearson thinks it's only right that it should stay in town, be preserved and located in a public place. He suggests the library as one possibility.

Unfortunately, he doesn't have time on his side. The Merry-Go-Round is listed on an online auction site, along with a lot of other miscellaneous equipment from the store, and, as of early Tuesday, the auction ends in just two days. As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, it had received bids and was up to $375. How high it might go is anybody's guess.

When Pearson was alerted to the auction, he started a "GoFundMe" account to solicit donations to the cause. He set the account's goal at $1,000.

Pearson says he intends to place a bid and hopes he, with the help of people contributing to the GoFundMe account, can win the Merry-Go-Round.

If he is successful, he has a plan. The Merry-Go-Round would be for the community. He says his first goal will be to find a storage place, hopefully in the town garage. Then he intends to address the Bloomfield Town Council to enlist their help and suggestions about where to place the Merry-Go-Round.

"The library would be a good place, it needs to be somewhere safe," said Pearson.

About my hometown's temple fair:
It is a traditional festival of my hometown (a very small village), being held one time a year, and I don't know how many years it was held. But I remember it when I was very young. I guess it may be started from the year when the New China was founded, or maybe more earlier.
On this day, every family in the village shall go into the temple to worship the Chinese gods. It is said that this day is some Gods birthday. And to celebrate the Gods birthday, villagers will invite a theatrical troupe to act in an opera. Besides, many many hawkers and villagers make traders on the country fair.

The word carousel comes from the Italian word carosello (meaning "little war"). Carosello was a 12th-century game played by the Arabs and Turks, on horseback, using scented balls tossed from one to another. Anyone missing a catch was readily identified by the perfume they were doused with when the scented ball broke on impact.
Carosello was adopted by the French into an exhibition (now called carousel) of many types of horsemanship pageantry and competition, including spearing a ring suspended from a post or tree, while riding at full speed. A practice machine was created to help young knights prepare for this competition - a series of legless wooden horses attached to a rotating platform (driven by human-power or horse-power). When this practice machine proved to be as popular with women and children as it was with the young knights, the carousel was born.
The carousel gained even more popularity when steam power was harnessed to drive the platform around and around. Now the carousel wasn't limited to just the size and weight that could be managed by horse, mule, or man.
Though there were a few carousels operating in the US by the end of the Civil War, the real "golden age" of the carousel was from about 1880 to about 1930. During that time, there were many companies making carousels, including the Dentzel Company, Philadelphia Toboggan Company, M.C. Illions, Herschell-Spillman, Stein & Goldstein, Looff, and C.W. Parker, to name a few.
In addition to the master carvers whose companies bore their name (such as Dentzel and Illions), there were several other 'master' carvers who worked for various companies at different times (and some who even briefly had their own companies). Some of the most famous master carvers included Daniel Muller, Charles Carmel, John Zalar, and Salvatore Cerniglario.
Sadly, out of the many thousands of hand-carved carousels that were built during the 'golden age', only a small fraction have survived, less than 200. Conservation organizations such as the National Carousel Association have done much to preserve the few remaining carousels for future generations. After all - they are magic...just try to ride one with a frown on your face! It won't stay there for long....
